An independent variable is a variable under the supposition that their values do not depend on the values of the other ones. Therefore, a variable is considered independent when it can be given a value without relying on the value of other variables.
In the context of mathematical modeling or machine learning, the independent variables are considered as inputs that are able to explain a dependent variable.
