For the longest time, I have just left my backpack and shoes simply lying around the house in different parts. I would like to have a single area that mentally let’s me offload that, a place that I know it’s where stuff waits for me when I leave home and where I drop off stuff when I arrive. In the hallway, there is a small corner, 60cm x 60cm, that would make the best place for it. I would like it to:
- Have a (relatively big) shoe rack with easy access: no doors or lids. The coat wardrobe exists for that and I don’t use it because it’s too much friction.
- Have a place to leave, at the very least, two backpacks. Hanging them is probably not ideal.
- A small place to leave everyday carry items: wallet, keys, etc. Maybe a couple of charging stations as well.
- Some light to help, since that corner is not that well lit.
On 2026-03-11 I decided to start tackling this project.
Ideas
- This table could be used as a 60x60 surface to leave stuff on top and shoes below. This other table seems equivalent, with a color that would fit better.
- This shoe rack by Joseph & Joseph looks nice but may be a bit of an overkill.
- This one is much simpler, but has the wrong color. It would however fit tightly in the gap below the table.
- This one is the cheapest so far and the color fits. The measurements should work.
Thoughts
After a week since I assembled the first part (March 26th), I think that the table is a perfect fit for the use case. After the Easter holidays, I plan to order a second table for the other side of the wardrobe, so I can have one space for backpacks and big things and another one for keys, wallet, etc that can be a bit nicer. I still have not found a proper light source for the space.
