Vir Heroicus Sublimis

Oil on canvas, 7’ 11 3/8” × 17’ 9 1/4” (242.2 × 541.7 cm). A massive field of cadmium red punctuated by five vertical “zips” — Newman’s signature motif. The title, Latin for “Man, Heroic and Sublime,” signals his ambition to create a Color Field art of existential scale and spiritual grandeur.
