A simple two-pour recipe for the Z1, designed for minimal gear: pre-dosed/pre-ground coffee, a 250ml travel mug for pouring, and a Melodrip. Originally published by Orea as part of the official Z1 guides. Scaled here to fill a 250ml vessel to the brim — so the mug itself becomes the measuring device, no scale required on the road.
Design decisions
- Two pours, not one: a true single continuous pour on a fast flat-bottom brewer risks channeling and over-agitation. Splitting into halves with a short pause gives the bed time to settle and drain evenly.
- Mug-to-the-brim dosing: filling the 250ml travel mug fully = total water. Pouring “roughly half” then “the rest” is the only measurement needed — no marks, no scale.
- Melodrip is load-bearing: it eliminates kettle agitation, which is what makes a two-pour (no bloom) recipe work on pre-ground coffee without channeling.
- Start water hotter than target: pouring 93ºC water through an open travel mug then the Melodrip bleeds a few degrees. Boil-off to 95–96ºC so it lands on the bed around 92–93ºC.
- Melodrip height: low over the bed on pour 1 (helps degas stale pre-ground coffee), higher on pour 2 (gentler).
The Scandi (scaled for 250ml mug)
- Coffee: 15g @ medium (20-24 Comandante C40 clicks)
- Water: 250ml @ 95–96ºC off the boil (lands ~93ºC)
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| 00:00 | Pour to 125g (half the mug) through Melodrip, low |
| 01:15 | Pour to 250g (rest of the mug), Melodrip higher |
| 02:30 - 03:00 | Drawdown complete, enjoy |
Original recipe (12g / 200ml)
The canonical Scandi from Orea’s guides, for reference when not travel-constrained:
- Coffee: 12g @ medium (20-24 Comandante C40 clicks)
- Water: 200ml @ 93ºC
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| 00:00 | Pour to 100g |
| 01:15 | Pour to 200g |
| 02:30 - 03:00 | Enjoy |
Dialing in on the road
One-variable tuning based on the cup:
- Thin / sour → grind 1-2 clicks finer next time
- Bitter / astringent → grind 1-2 clicks coarser next time
- Drawdown faster than 2:30 → grind finer (pre-ground has more fines, but expect to drift coarser)
- Drawdown slower than 3:00 → grind coarser
